'Welcome to Wrexham' is an entertaining sports doc, but don't watch it for celebrities
This documentary could have gone in many different directions.
When news broke that actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney had bought Wrexham AFC, a football club in the fifth tier of English football, it raised many questions.
What will his acquisition mean for the club? How will it affect the local community? Why were two Hollywood actors even interested in Wrexham?
Disney+'s documentary series Welcome to Wrexham explores all of those questions in eight episodes, but it mainly focuses on the first two — and it's better for it.
The series begins with some essential history and context. We go back in time to 2020, with shocking headlines about McElhenney.
And after Reynolds was interested in purchasing the club, the public's reaction followed as the news spread to the local community.
The documentary cuts to a series of video calls following McElhenney and Reynolds between Wrexham and the misty sun of Los Angeles as they settle their bid for the club.
In the meantime, while at the same time we get to know the players, the coaches and the people running things in Wales.
